Description
Art Deco Rockwell Silver overlay on red cocktail glass with black stem. 3 cocktail glasses, wine glasses, or martini glasses, the stem is black, with trim around the bottom base and the top mouth. The vessel color is red, or a bright orange red combination. The geometric floral design is applied sterling silver overlay. I believe there are partial acid marks on the bottom of 2 of the glasses. I cannot distinguish what they partially say. The Rockwell Silver Co has a shield logo with Rockwell on it, it could be their logo, or the name of the manufacturer of the glasses. I believe it is the made in Czechoslovakia acid mark (which would be the manufacturer – not the decorator). Please read excerpt below for further clarification. Pieces date to the 1920’s. App: 5″ H x 3 1/8″ D across the top.
Rockwell and Silver City Overlay: written by Paul S. Butkus
(Excerpts from article) Meriden, (CT) was home to several silver overlay companies, most notably the Rockwell Silver Company and the Silver City Glass Company. Overlay companies did not produce their own glass but rather decorated pieces made by the large glass, china or ceramic companies and the same blanks were frequently used by competing overlay companies. The use of the same blanks, paper labels or similarly themed designs can often complicate the proper attribution for some pieces. As a result, collectors often identify a piece simply by the glass manufacturer due to the greater availability of information on those companies. Another complicating factor in overlay identification is the way in which some patterns were adapted to varying sized pieces. The overall composition was cropped as needed to fit smaller pieces.
